2009 ND Envirothon Winners - Sargent Central High School
Sargent Central High School won the 2009 ND Envirothon competition, again!
ND State Envirothon

The first North Dakota Envirothon competition was held May 7-8, 2000, at the Wesley Acres Bible Camp, north of Valley City, North Dakota. Four teams attended the competition, each with five members and coaches. Also in attendance were volunteers and guests from a wide range of organizations and agencies from nearly every corner of the state and one Canadian province.

In 2009, North Dakota is working with just under 90 teams participating from 35 schools, 4-H Clubs and FFA groups across the state! The ND State Envirothon competition was held at the Crystal Springs Camp from May 7-9, 2009. Sargent High School won, again!

WHAT IS THE ENVIROTHON?

The North Dakota Envirothon is a problem-solving natural resource competition for high school students. Students receive real life, hands-on training in the areas of forestry, soil, water, wildlife and a current environmental issue. Natural resource professionals, dedicated citizens and teachers offer their time to work with these students to develop the critical thinking skills necessary to make wise decisions in the future concerning natural resource and environmental issues.

Team training usually takes place throughout the entire school year. While learning about natural resources, their benefits and a variety of environmental issues, students also develop communication skills and build conservation partnerships. Students learn the skill of working and thinking as a team to assess natural resource issues affecting the environment. They learn to consider each other's opinions and rely on the strengths of their team members. The result is students who become enthusiastic, environmentally aware, action-oriented decision makers of the future.

In the late spring, each school selects a team of five students and one alternate to represent their school at the state ND Envirothon competition in May. Young minds love a challenge, especially one that involves the environment. The idea of matching wits with their peers stimulates, inspires and excites while being competitive and having fun.
